Managing the pain of arthritis: there is an alternative
By: The Arthritic Association

It is often said there is no cure for arthritis. And yet, every year, hundreds of people find a way to manage, even banish the pain of arthritis. They achieve this not through drugs, but by following the de Coti Marsh Home Treatment Programme for Arthritis. The Programme is gaining increasing recognition with health practitioners throughout the UK. Here, Veronica Joyce tells Robin Houghton her story.

When did you first develop arthritis?
It came on over a number of years and there were three main contributing factors. Firstly, I had a benign tumour on a parathyroid which upset the regulation of calcium in my body; the surgeon said that over a period of about ten years calcium had been damaging my organs rather than nourishing my bones. Secondly, I was carrying excess weight. As for the third reason, I had two falls from my bicycle. Even though my hip and shoulder hurt from the falls, I thought it was too trivial to seek medical advice. How wrong I was.

How did you first hear about the Home Treatment Programme?
I first read about The Arthritic Association quite by chance in a magazine, in 2002. I sent off for the information pack, read through the literature and knew I had to try it. One of the first things I did after joining was to book an appointment with John Wedlake Griffiths, who was the charity's Health Practitioner for the London area. After examining my joints he suggested I follow the Home Treatment Programme and take the preparations for three months, then make a follow-up appointment. This was the first stage of recovery, as set out by Charles de Coti-Marsh.

Did the Programme work?
The dietary guidance made so much sense - I lost a stone simply through giving up red meat, and the Home Treatment Programme, being a natural treatment for arthritis, made me much more conscious of the quality as well as the quantity of food I ate.

When I reached Stage Two, I visited Mr Wedlake Griffiths again and he started me on a programme of joint manipulation together with exercises I could do at home on my own. On that visit, my husband had to accompany me because I was so uncomfortable I could only walk a few steps without stopping. It may sound unbelievable, but I walked out of the consulting room unaided.

I continue to visit Lesley Guilfoyle, John’s successor, and, thanks to the skill and encouragement of them both, the strength in my joints and muscles has steadily improved. Unfortunately I discovered the Home Treatment Programme too late to save my hip, which I recently needed to have replaced. But I shall continue with the exercises, preparations and the diet in order to maintain the health of my other joints through natural means.

What would you say to other arthritis sufferers?
The work of Charles de Coti-Marsh has really been a lifeline for me. I always tell people about The Arthritic Association and give them a copy of the Joining leaflet – I even have a friend in Athens who has joined and who has the preparations sent out to her. If you’re looking for a natural, alternative treatment for arthritis do try it – you’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain.
